Din Thomas retires from cornering fighters after Gillian Robertson’s disappointing loss at UFC 330

Din Thomas, the UFC analyst and Deep Waters host, has announced his retirement from cornering fighters after UFC 330, where he worked the corner for strawweight title challenger Gillian Robertson. Robertson's unanimous decision loss to Mackenzie Dern marked the end of Thomas's three-decade coaching career.

Thomas made the announcement on the UFC's post-fight show, explaining that he had set a personal goal to corner Robertson as far as her career could take her. "I told myself I would continue to do this until I took Gillian as far as she could go; I think that might be as far as she can go, and I am officially retiring from cornering fighters tonight," he said, referencing former UFC coach Matt Serra's similar exit from cornering duties.

During Robertson's title bout, Thomas visibly expressed frustration with her performance between rounds, even urging her to "wake up" at one point. Although Robertson won the fifth round, she could not overcome Dern's control throughout the fight.

Thomas cited the mounting demands of his UFC roles—both as an analyst and as the host of the promotion's YouTube show—as factors in his decision to step back from cornering. He acknowledged that the work is demanding, requiring coaches to be present all week and manage fighters' weight cuts, responsibilities he felt he could no longer prioritize fairly. "I've been slowly telling you... It's a lot of work, it's a lot of stress," Thomas explained. "They need somebody who is really going to put that type of work in with them."

Despite stepping away from cornering, Thomas said he would continue working with fighters in other capacities. His nearly three-decade career included a long tenure at American Top Team, where he coached several UFC champions including Amanda Nunes and Tyron Woodley.
