Mackenzie Dern doesn’t feel she needs to beat Zhang Weili to cement championship status after UFC 330

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her UFC strawweight title at UFC 330, defeating Gillian Robertson via unanimous decision in the co-main event. The victory marks Dern's first championship defense since winning the vacant 115-pound strap by submission over Virna Jandiroba at UFC 321 in October.

Dern claimed the title vacated by Zhang Weili, who previously dominated the strawweight division before moving up to flyweight in an unsuccessful challenge to champion Valentina Shevchenko. With Zhang's return weight class and timeline still uncertain, questions linger about whether a future showdown between the two champions would be necessary to solidify Dern's legacy.

Dern dismissed that notion at the post-fight press conference, stating she already proved her championship credentials. "I don't think I need to win Weili to be a champ," she said. "The more defenses I can get, whoever comes next, I think I proved that I was the champ." Dern noted that both Robertson and her previous opponent Jandiroba arrived on five-fight winning streaks, and she herself has now strung together four consecutive victories.

Other contenders including Tatiana Suarez, Alexia Thainara, and prospect Fatima Kline have staked claims for a title shot. Dern expressed openness to any challenger the UFC presents, saying she aims to fight again in March—roughly six months out—with a goal of competing twice yearly.

While satisfied with her dominant wrestling display, Dern expressed frustration at failing to finish Robertson via submission despite threatening with chokes and leg lock attempts. Still, she emphasized confidence in her evolution as champion and appetite for continued improvement.
