Lucas Fernando nearly quit MMA before breakthrough UFC 330 victory

Lucas Fernando made a successful UFC debut at UFC 330, stopping Rafael Tobias with a devastating knee strike and follow-up ground-and-pound in the third round. The Brazilian's promotional entrance comes after he nearly abandoned mixed martial arts altogether.

Fernando credited his wife with convincing him to pursue a UFC career after a discouraging loss at Dana White's Contender Series in 2023. Doubting his commitment to the sport, Fernando called his wife to discuss stepping away, but she urged him to continue. "After the loss in Contender, I called her up and said, 'You know, maybe this is not for me. I should look for something else. Or maybe shouldn't dedicate to this 100%. She said no. She believed in me, she supported me, she supported this dream of mine to be in the UFC.'"

Following the DWCS defeat against Cesar Almeida, Fernando suffered another setback in the Legacy Fighting Alliance but rebounded with four consecutive victories. He won and successfully defended the LFA light heavyweight title twice, earning another opportunity with the UFC. His striking display against Tobias announced his arrival in the promotion, and his submission victory has validated both his dedication and his wife's faith in his potential.

At the post-fight press conference, Fernando expressed his desire to return home to Brazil after spending a month training in the United States, emphasizing his gratitude for his wife's unwavering support throughout his journey to the UFC.
