Khabib Nurmagomedov reveals the UFC fight that pushed him closest to his limit
Khabib Nurmagomedov identified his 2020 lightweight title defense against Justin Gaethje as the closest he came to being pushed to his limits, though he emphasized he never truly reached his breaking point in competition. Nurmagomedov won that bout by submitting Gaethje with a triangle choke in the second round, but the circumstances surrounding the fight made it uniquely challenging.
The primary difficulty stemmed from personal tragedy. Nurmagomedov's father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, died from COVID-19 shortly before the bout. The loss profoundly affected the Russian fighter's mental state heading into the fight. "It was hard to pull myself together," Nurmagomedov told Lex Fridman. "Everything piled up at once; my father was gone. Training without my father, without the person I was doing this for, the person I wanted to become champion for, to prove to him that I could become the best."
Physical setbacks compounded the emotional burden. Nurmagomedov battled multiple injuries throughout his training camp, leaving him in suboptimal condition. Despite these obstacles, he maintained mental sharpness. "Physically, I was not in the best shape; I had injury after injury after injury. But, mentally speaking, I stayed completely sharp," he said. Nurmagomedov (29-0) has also acknowledged Gaethje as the hardest striker he faced during his undefeated career. The Dagestani legend promised his mother he would never fight without his father in his corner, a vow that led him to retire rather than return to competition after his father's death, a commitment Dana White was unable to alter.
