Justin Gaethje unsure he’ll fight again: ‘I don’t need to’
UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje says he is undecided about his fighting future, despite holding the undisputed title after a stunning upset victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 in June. The 37-year-old, who also defeated interim champion Paddy Pimblett in January before capturing the undisputed belt, acknowledged that Arman Tsarukyan has earned the next title shot following Tsarukyan's knockout win over Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331. However, Gaethje is cautious about committing to another bout.
During an appearance on the "Flagrant" podcast, Gaethje explained that nearly four decades of fighting—starting in 2008 with some 40 bouts across amateur and professional ranks—has taken a significant physical toll. He revealed lingering injuries from his recent wars, including a deep knee bruise and hand damage that prevents him from punching properly. "I don't need to [fight again]," Gaethje said, emphasizing that at this stage of his career, another fight is optional rather than necessary.
Gaethje stressed that he is not avoiding Tsarukyan and views the Armenian-born fighter as the deserving next challenger "if and when" he defends his title. However, the champion wants to rest, recover mentally, and enjoy his status as champion for the remainder of the year before making what he called a "business decision and a life decision" about his future. He noted that the accumulated damage from high-level competition demands proper recuperation, and he intends to take that time before determining whether to continue his career.
