Morning Report: Daniel Cormier sees ‘no easy option’ for Justin Gaethje’s next move

Daniel Cormier has outlined the thorny strategic dilemma facing newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje as he contemplates his next move at age 37. At UFC's White House event in June, Gaethje delivered one of MMA's most crowd-pleasing performances, stunning undefeated Ilia Topuria in the fourth round to claim the undisputed 155-pound title. Now Gaethje must choose between defending against top contender Arman Tsarukyan, rematching Topuria, or walking away on top—a decision complicated by legacy, age, and financial incentive.
Cormier noted that Gaethje faces genuine obstacles whichever path he takes. Tsarukyan has solidified his claim to a title shot with a highlight-reel knockout of Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331, yet bookmakers oddly favor him as an underdog against Gaethje despite the champion's recent masterpiece. A rematch with Topuria carries its own risks; while Gaethje won decisively, Topuria hurt him at moments and will return with improvements to his timing and rhythm. The question becomes whether Gaethje has anything left to prove after his performance on the sport's biggest stage.
Gaethje's financial leverage may prove decisive. The champion has earned 17 post-fight bonuses across 16 UFC appearances, including an extra $825,000 from his White House victory. Cormier cautioned that chasing bigger paydays can trap fighters in a cycle of comebacks. "If he wins, then the money will just get bigger, and there will be that pull to come back again," Cormier explained. "It never stops." Gaethje also reportedly harbored doubts about fighting after his mother expressed concerns about his safety following his previous title bid, adding emotional weight to the decision ahead.
