Renato Moicano explains why he should be Ilia Topuria’s next opponent: ‘He needs an easy fight’

Renato Moicano has positioned himself as a potential opponent for Ilia Topuria's return to competition following the featherweight's knockout loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC White House in June. Speaking ahead of his own bout against Tom Nolan at UFC Vegas 123, Moicano argued that Topuria needs a confidence-rebuilding fight and suggested himself as an ideal candidate.
Topuria entered the Gaethje clash undefeated at 17–0 in MMA, having won nine straight UFC bouts with seven finishes, including victories over Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Alexander Volkanovski. That perfect record ended in dramatic fashion when Gaethje stopped him at the White House, an upset Moicano described as a "total humiliation" on the sport's biggest stage. However, Moicano believes the loss, while devastating, may ultimately sharpen Topuria's edge. "He must be training like an animal," Moicano said, suggesting that humbling defeat could make Topuria more dangerous upon his return.
Moicano also reflected on Topuria's fighting approach leading into the Gaethje fight, arguing the Brazilian felt he could knock out an opponent known for his durability. "He thought he could knock out a guy who's difficult to knock out," Moicano explained, before adding that Topuria will need to adopt "humility" to rebuild. Despite framing himself as a suitable comeback opponent, Moicano remained noncommittal about specific callouts, saying he prefers to trust his instincts post-fight rather than plan speeches in advance.
The lightweight division has grown crowded with emerging talent, including recent UFC debutant Salahdine Parnasse and potentially undefeated PFL champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Moicano stressed that while he'd consider fighting Topuria, he would demand significant compensation for riskier matchups and emphasized that his value and career legacy are not solely defined by the UFC, noting his growing YouTube channel and broader opportunities beyond fighting.
