Michael Morales expects to be backup for UFC 330: Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry title fight

Michael Morales has positioned himself as the official backup fighter for UFC 330's welterweight title main event between champion Islam Makhachev and challenger Ian Machado Garry, scheduled for Philadelphia on August 15. The undefeated Ecuadorian, who informed MMA Junkie of his backup status, carries an impressive 19-0 record and has won all seven of his UFC fights since joining the promotion via Dana White's Contender Series in 2021.

Morales has built significant momentum in 2025 with two wins, both part of a recent three-fight knockout streak over ranked opposition. His victims in that stretch—Sean Brady, Gilbert Burns, and Neil Magny—all failed to survive the opening round against the 27-year-old welterweight, establishing him as a genuine threat at 170 pounds.

Makhachev, the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter and former lightweight champion, is making his first welterweight title defense after defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November. He is familiar with late-minute fighter changes; at UFC 311, he faced Renato Moicano instead of originally scheduled challenger Arman Tsarukyan, who withdrew due to a back injury. Garry brings a 10-1 UFC record into the title fight, with his only loss coming to Shavkat Rakhmonov. The New York native rebounded from that defeat with wins over former champion Belal Muhammad and top contender Carlos Prates to earn this opportunity.

The backup role reflects the high-stakes nature of title fights, where injuries or medical issues can force last-minute replacements. UFC 330 also features strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern defending her title against Gillian Robertson in the co-main event.
