Islam Makhachev, Jon Jones trade barbs over GOAT debate: ‘Your whole life seems to be tied to breaking the rules’

Islam Makhachev and Jon Jones engaged in a social media exchange over GOAT (greatest of all time) credentials, with Makhachev challenging the validity of Jones' winning streak due to his past doping violations.

Makhachev told Red Corner MMA that Jones' accomplishments should not be counted toward GOAT discussions because he tested positive for banned substances twice, including a turinabol metabolite in a fight against Makhachev's friend Daniel Cormier—a result later overturned to no-contest and stripped of Jones' 205-pound title. Makhachev acknowledged Jones as one of history's greatest athletes but argued that his streak should restart from zero due to competing under the influence of performance-enhancing drugs.

Jones responded swiftly on social media, defending himself by noting that USADA determined his detected substance was neither performance-enhancing nor intentional. He emphasized that his hand has been raised every time he competed and took shots at both Cormier and Makhachev, suggesting the latter has yet to reach his level in GOAT discussions. He also referenced knockouts Makhachev had suffered in his career.

Makhachev countered that Jones' entire career seemed defined by rule-breaking, stating, "Your whole life seems to be tied to breaking the rules one way or another, and somehow, you're never the one to be blamed." Both fighters have won and defended UFC titles in two weight classes, with Makhachev currently reigning at welterweight and Jones having last competed at heavyweight before stepping away in 2024.
