Islam Makhachev targets early 2027 for next UFC title fight

Islam Makhachev hopes to return to championship action in early 2027, pending recovery from minor spinal issues and the UFC's scheduling. The reigning welterweight champion and top pound-for-pound fighter has competed only once in 2026, successfully defending his title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in August—an achievement that extended his UFC winning streak to 17 consecutive victories, a promotion record. Since moving up from lightweight, where he compiled four successful title defenses (also a division record), Makhachev has required some physical adjustments. Following his August bout, he underwent three MRIs and spinal evaluation. "There are a few small issues, so I'm working on them," Makhachev told Match TV. "It's nothing serious. I'm just strengthening my spine." The devout Muslim champion traditionally structures his fight schedule around Ramadan, which begins in February 2027. "We'll wait for the UFC to call," Makhachev said. "I think the ideal scenario would be to fight before Ramadan. A date before Ramadan would be ideal."
