The Irish fighter drew particular scrutiny for repeatedly clinching and hugging Makhachev throughout the fight—a dynamic even Makhachev addressed immediately after, questioning the constant physical contact. UFC CEO Dana White also weighed in negatively, suggesting Garry lacked "killer instinct" and should have pressed for a finish rather than engaging in clinches.

Lima, who cornered Garry in Philadelphia, defended his fighter's approach and said he did not perceive the hugging as problematic during the action. He noted that similar behavior is common in MMA, citing Charles Oliveira—a fighter he has also coached to a title shot against Makhachev—as an example of someone who routinely greets opponents between rounds. Lima characterized the contact as a sign of respect rather than a tactical flaw, and dismissed suggestions it altered the outcome.

While acknowledging that greater aggression might have changed the result, Lima expressed confidence in Garry's future against Makhachev. He praised his fighter's adaptability and high fight IQ, pointing to Garry's ability to adjust to diverse opponents like striker Carlos Prates and grappler Makhachev. Lima also spoke respectfully of Makhachev as both an opponent and person, noting the champion's consistent professionalism.

Lima remains optimistic about a rematch, believing Garry came closer than most to dethroning the dominant champion and that with refinement, the welterweight could claim the belt in 2025.
