Michael Morales calls Carlos Prates an ‘easy’ fight for Islam Makhachev
Michael Morales, an unbeaten welterweight, challenged the top contenders in his division and champion Islam Makhachev, suggesting the champion prefers to fight Carlos Prates because it is an "easy" matchup. Prates currently leads the queue for a title shot, with Morales, fellow undefeated 170-pounder Shavkat Rakhmonov, and Ian Garry rounding out the division's elite.
Morales publicly addressed Makhachev on Instagram, reminding the champion that he has repeatedly requested a title fight since Makhachev moved to welterweight. Referencing Makhachev's earlier suggestion that Morales and Prates should fight in a title eliminator, Morales welcomed the matchup, branding it a "Deadpool vs. Spider-Man" clash. However, with Prates seemingly next in line for a title shot, Morales took aim at Makhachev's choice, arguing the champion selected Prates because he represents a less formidable opponent.
"I want the hard fight. I want the great fighters. I want the fights that people are gonna remember," Morales stated, signaling his preference for tougher competition. He added that if Makhachev proceeds with Prates instead, he will pursue his own opportunities in 2027. Morales also directed criticism at Garry, the former title challenger, and Rakhmonov, who has been sidelined since December 2024 with a knee injury but is expected to return next year. The comments underscore growing tension within the welterweight title picture as multiple elite fighters jostle for position.
