Next up? Islam Makhachev names most deserving title challenger

Islam Makhachev has named Carlos Prates as his preferred next challenger for the UFC welterweight title after successfully defending his belt against Ian Garry via unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Makhachev's first title defense came in a competitive bout with Garry, and the Russian champion outlined his reasoning for selecting Prates over other contenders during the Paramount+ post-fight show. Though both Michael Morales and Shavkat Rakhmonov have been mentioned as potential challengers, Makhachev favored Prates based on recent activity. Rakhmonov has been sidelined since December 2024, while Morales has not fought regularly. "If you ask me today, Shavkat [Rakhmonov] is not fighting; Prates is still fighting, still active," Makhachev said. "Morales also is good, but I don't remember the last time he fought. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates."

Prates carries a 24-7 record and has remained active despite losing to Garry in April 2025. The Brazilian has since recorded finishing victories over notable competition including former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena, as well as Geoff Neal. In contrast, Morales and Rakhmonov both remain undefeated, but their lack of recent activity has weakened their cases in Makhachev's view. The champion's endorsement could prove significant in determining the division's next title contender.
