Islam Makhachev chooses Carlos Prates over Michael Morales as next title challenger

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has signaled his preference for Carlos Prates as his next title challenger, moving past undefeated Michael Morales in the divisional pecking order. Makhachev (28-1) is set to defend his title against Ian Garry (17-1) at UFC 330 on August 15 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, but he's already looking ahead to potential second-title-defense opponents.

Morales (19-0) was named the official backup fighter for the main event and had campaigned for a shot, but Makhachev believes the Ecuadorian hasn't done enough to warrant one. The champion criticized Morales' inactivity, noting he hasn't fought since knocking out Sean Brady at UFC 322 last November—the same card where Makhachev captured the title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena and Prates finished former champion Leon Edwards.

Prates (24-7), the surging Brazilian contender, has impressed Makhachev with his recent form. Most notably, Prates finished Della Maddalena earlier this year, while Makhachev won his matchup with the Australian via decision. The champion jokingly refers to Prates as "Nutella cake" after spotting him eating Nutella cake during UFC 322 fight week. "He has to fight, bro," Makhachev told MMA Junkie of Morales. "Too much contenders. He has to fight against Prates or Shavkat… We have to know who is the No. 1 contender. Nutella cake is going to be good opponent. Exciting fighter, it's going to be a good fight."
