Dana White gives encouraging update on Raoni Barcelos
UFC President Dana White has provided an encouraging update on Raoni Barcelos following his alarming loss to Raul Rosas Jr. at UFC Vegas 121 on September 26. The Brazilian bantamweight was winning on the judges' scorecards heading into the fifth round when he appeared to lose consciousness during a wrestling exchange against the Octagon wall at Meta APEX in Las Vegas. The referee immediately halted the bout and Barcelos was stretchered out of the cage.
Barceulos was transported to a Level I trauma center where he regained consciousness. White confirmed that the 39-year-old is now lucid and able to walk as doctors conduct tests to determine what caused the episode. The UFC CEO emphasized that the promotion took all necessary precautions, noting that all of Barcelos' pre-fight medicals were triple-checked before the event. White also highlighted that six doctors and three ambulances were present at the venue when the incident occurred, and that Barcelos received immediate transport to a trauma facility rather than a standard hospital.
"All the pre-fight medicals were triple-checked; everything was good," White said at the Dana White's Contender Series post-fight presser. "There were six doctors here that night, three ambulances. He was taken straight to the trauma center, not to Valley. Everything was done the right way and the outcome was good."
White indicated that his primary concern moving forward is Barcelos' health and recovery, rather than his return to competition. The incident marks one of the more concerning medical episodes in recent UFC history, though the rapid response and Barcelos' subsequent recovery have been viewed positively by the organization.
