Kai Asakura finally has momentum; UFC Shanghai will test it

Kai Asakura is primed to build on his recent momentum when he faces Qileng Aori at UFC Shanghai on August 29. The Japanese veteran, a former Rizin Fighting Federation champion, endured a difficult transition to the UFC, suffering consecutive losses at flyweight against former champion Alexandre Pantoja and Tim Elliott. A move up to bantamweight proved successful: Asakura secured his first promotional victory in May with a knockout of Cameron Smotherman at UFC Macau, extending his career finish record to 17 stoppages in 22 wins.

Aori, a 33-year-old Chinese fighter, enters the bout with a 4–5–1 UFC record and has struggled to find consistent form. He won just two of his last six outings and is coming off a May TKO loss to Cody Haddon. The Shanghai event will provide Asakura an opportunity to string together consecutive UFC wins and cement his place in the bantamweight division after his flyweight struggles.

UFC Shanghai shapes up as a significant card for the Chinese market. The Fight Night headliner will feature Umar Nurmagomedov against Yadong Song in another bantamweight clash. The promotion has also confirmed appearances by several local fighters, including former title challenger Xiaonan Yan, veteran flyweight Su Mudaerji, and UFC newcomer Ce Liu.
