Kai Asakura makes his case for top-ranked UFC opponent

Kai Asakura is making the case for a significant step up in competition at bantamweight, arguing that his resume warrants a matchup against a top-ranked contender in the UFC. The former Rizin champion, who competed at flyweight upon joining the promotion, is fresh off two consecutive knockout victories at 135 pounds after initially struggling in the lighter division.

Asakura's UFC debut came with high expectations—he received a title shot against then-flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, which he lost by submission. A second consecutive submission loss to veteran Tim Elliott followed, prompting his move to bantamweight. Since climbing to 135 pounds, Asakura has impressed with stoppage wins over Cameron Smotherman and Qileng Aori, establishing himself as a finisher in his new weight class.

During a YouTube video, Asakura outlined his reasoning: "So, I was brought in with the initial evaluation that I was allowed to have a title fight. So, having moved to bantamweight and winning two fights in a row in such a good way, is there a chance that I'll be highly rated and paired with a top-tier opponent? That's definitely possible." Asakura's logic suggests that if the UFC deemed him worthy of title contention at flyweight in his debut, his current form at bantamweight should merit elite opposition. Whether the promotion agrees remains to be determined, but Asakura has made a compelling argument for accelerated matchmaking.
