Kai Asakura finds new life in UFC following rocky flyweight start
Kai Asakura has found renewed momentum in the UFC bantamweight division following a difficult start at flyweight. The Japanese fighter defeated Qileng Aori via second-round technical knockout at UFC Shanghai on August 29, extending his bantamweight record to 2–0 after suffering back-to-back submission losses at 125 pounds.
Asakura credited the weight class change with providing him the physical advantages needed to compete more aggressively. "At bantamweight, I have more power and I have more speed," he said in a post-fight interview. "So, I feel like I can fight with more confidence than at flyweight." He also broke down the finishing sequence, explaining that he closed the distance after recognizing Aori was retreating and looking to counter with his right hand, then capitalized with a head kick after his opponent focused on body shots.
With consecutive victories at 135 pounds, Asakura is now looking upward in the rankings. He expressed his ambition to face a top-15 bantamweight next, saying "I want to fight in Top 15, anyone." The move to bantamweight appears to have revitalized his UFC career, transforming him from a struggling flyweight into a rising contender in a weight class that better suits his natural size and striking power.
