Alderete told MMA Fighting he had no regrets about the post-fight theatrics, explaining that Smotherman and his corner had trash-talked throughout the buildup and even during breaks in the action. The young fighter claimed he saw Smotherman's supporters making obscene gestures at him from cageside, which prompted his response. "I'm fulfilling the energy," Alderete said of his celebration. He also noted that Smotherman had talked negatively about him in a pre-fight interview that aired in the arena, further fueling their animosity.

Smotherman alleged he was fouled multiple times during the contest, citing five low blows, a headbutt, and an eye poke. Two low blows were indeed obvious enough that the referee deducted a point from Alderete in the second round.
