Undefeated teen prospect puts ex-UFC fighter to sleep in controversial Fury FC fight

Undefeated 19-year-old bantamweight Jay Alderete defeated UFC veteran Cameron Smotherman by submission (D'arce choke) in the second round at Fury FC 121 in Houston on Sunday, but the bout was marred by controversy and a heated post-fight confrontation.

Alderete, fighting with a perfect record, dropped Smotherman with a head kick early in Round 2 before sinking in the choke that forced a tap. However, the fight was defined by repeated low blows from Alderete throughout both rounds. In Round 1, a brutal low kick hurt Smotherman badly but no point was deducted. Another low blow early in Round 2 sent Smotherman to the canvas and finally drew a point deduction from the referee. A third low blow stopped the action later in the round without penalty.

After the finish, Alderete taunted the downed Smotherman with a crotch chop and continued trash talk as he regained his feet, forcing security to intervene. Smotherman repeatedly tried to return to the cage to engage Alderete while officials held him back.

Despite the controversy, the victory represented Alderete's most impressive win to date. He has finished five of his six professional opponents and faced significantly higher-level competition in Smotherman, a former UFC fighter. Alderete's previous opponents had a combined record of 9-23, so many observers were curious to see how he would perform against a more credentialed foe. Following the win, Alderete called for a UFC contract with crowd support, signaling his intention to pursue the world's premier promotion. Smotherman later responded to the fight's events on Instagram.
