Raul Rosas Jr. scores bizarre finish in UFC Vegas 121 main event
The UFC Apex in Las Vegas hosted UFC Vegas 121 (also known as UFC Fight Night 289), an action-packed event featuring nine finishes inside the distance, including one disqualification. The main event showcased rising contender Raul Rosas Jr. (13-1, 7-1 UFC) competing in his first UFC headline bout against veteran Raoni Barcelos (22-6, 11-5 UFC).
Early exchanges favored the quicker, lighter-footed Rosas Jr., though Barcelos relied on his wrestling pedigree to drive the action to the canvas. Despite being taken down repeatedly, Rosas Jr. remained active and worked his way back to his feet. Barcelos countered with effective hooks and short-range punches delivered in an unorthodox style. The back-and-forth pattern continued through Round 3, when Barcelos took Rosas Jr.'s back briefly before Rosas Jr. escaped and returned to standing.
Round 4 saw both fighters showing fatigue as the pace slowed. Barcelos repeatedly sought takedowns and eventually secured his opponent's back, attempting a rear-naked choke with a body triangle, but Rosas Jr. resisted every submission effort. In Round 5, Rosas Jr. appeared rejuvenated, stuffing takedown attempts before landing an inside trip midway through the round. Barcelos crashed to the canvas and was immediately knocked out, appearing to strike his head on impact. The finish came at 1:38 of Round 5. Barcelos was transported from the cage for medical attention and was later confirmed to be alert and receiving hospital evaluation.
Rosas Jr. extended his winning streak to six, furthering his pursuit of UFC's youngest championship record. The main card also featured nine additional bouts: Norma Dumont fell to Ailin Perez via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) in the co-main event women's bantamweight clash; Luis Hernandez submitted Sedriques Dumas with a standing guillotine at 0:57 of Round 1; Yazmin Jauregui defeated former LFA champion Vanessa Demopoulos in Round 1; "The Ultimate Fighter" Season 34 women's strawweight final saw Valesca Machado defeat Melissa Amaya at 3:19 of Round 2; Ilimbek Akylbek Uulu defeated Mehemmedali Osmanli by disqualification at 2:19 of Round 1 (illegal knee to grounded opponent) in the TUF Season 34 bantamweight final; Brady Hiestand submitted Rinya Nakamura at 4:07 of Round 2; defeated via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27); stopped at 1:47 of Round 3; knocked out at 4:14 of Round 1; defeated by TKO at 2:39 of Round 2; and Heili Alateng edged via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29).
