Carlos Prates says he’ll ignore UFC welterweight call-outs until title shot

Carlos Prates has made his intentions unmistakable: he will not engage with other welterweight contenders until he has earned his UFC title shot.

The Brazilian (24–7), nicknamed "The Nightmare," has been fielding call-outs from fellow contenders Sean Brady and Uros Medic in recent weeks. Rather than respond to their challenges, Prates posted a message on Instagram announcing that he will deal with them only after he captures the welterweight belt. "A lot of you guys [Sean Brady], [Uros Medic], and the other welterweights have been mentioning my name," Prates wrote. "Calm down, brothers. In my next fight, I'm taking that belt. After that, I'll deal with all of you and take you straight to the Kingdom of Pain. Be ready. Nothing personal, just business."

Prates has earned his confidence. The Brazilian has finished all seven of his UFC victories and holds a single decision loss to Ian Garry, who is now scheduled to challenge champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 330. Prates secured his position as a leading title contender with a stoppage victory over Jack Della Maddalena in May. The undefeated Michael Morales is also in the championship picture, and Makhachev himself has indicated openness to fighting Prates down the line.

Prates' declaration effectively freezes his inbox until he gets his shot at the 170-pound title, a move that keeps his focus laser-sharp on the belt and avoids the distractions and injuries that can derail championship momentum.
