Thad Jean survives war with Ernesto Rodriguez to win PFL welterweight title

Thad Jean captured the PFL welterweight title at the promotion's Summer Series event in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, July 25, surviving an all-out war with late-replacement Ernesto Rodriguez.

Originally pitted against 2024 tournament champion Shamil Musaev, Jean's scheduled opponent withdrew due to weight-cut complications. Rodriguez, a 2024 tournament king fighting on 48 hours' notice, rose to the occasion with a fierce performance that tested Jean throughout. The first round saw Rodriguez rattle Jean with heavy right hands, though Jean countered with striking combinations and attempted guillotine chokes. Round two belonged entirely to Rodriguez, who dropped Jean with a combination and repeatedly threatened with rear-naked choke submissions as Jean desperately fought for survival. Jean's superior conditioning became the deciding factor in round three. After scrambling to top position, Jean forced referee Mario Yamasaki to stop the fight via ground-and-pound, earning his championship reign.

Two light-heavyweight bouts preceded the main event. Rasul Magomedov and Sullivan Cauley delivered a brawl-of-the-year contender filled with takedowns, knockdowns, and cuts, with Magomedov prevailing by decision.
