PFL CEO John Martin already has Thad Jean's first title defense in mind

Thad Jean captured the PFL welterweight title at PFL Washington D.C., held at CareFirst Arena, with a third-round stoppage of Ernesto Rodriguez in the main event. Jean (12–0), who had been preparing for an entirely different opponent, navigated a dangerous second-round knockdown before wearing down the Cuban fighter to secure the vacant belt. Rodriguez, who accepted the matchup on just 48 hours' notice after Shamil Musaev withdrew due to weight-cut complications, showed courage despite the disadvantage of training for a separate fight at featherweight.

PFL CEO John Martin praised both fighters for their professionalism under pressure. Rodriguez was originally scheduled to face Aaron McKenzie on the same card before stepping up to the title fight, while Jean adapted seamlessly to the last-minute opponent swap. "We gave him a huge opportunity and right on the spot he recognized it," Martin said of Rodriguez. Despite Jean's victory, Martin indicated that the promotion views Musaev—the fighter Jean was originally slated to face—as the appropriate next challenger for the new champion.

Martin also highlighted a strong night for African talent on the card. Nkosi Ndebele defeated Brandon Davis by dominant decision, Eliezer Kubanza forced Chris Mixan to tap to a Brabo choke, Rasul Magomedov edged Sullivan Cauley in a competitive decision, and Rafael Xavier impressed with a first-round knockout of Tyson Pedro that came at the buzzer. "Tonight was a good night for PFL Africa," Martin said, noting that the evening's winners were positioning themselves for title contention.
