Paul Felder: ‘I thought he had a heart attack’ at UFC Vegas 121
Paul Felder witnessed a frightening medical emergency at UFC Vegas 121 when fighter Raoni Barcelos collapsed during the final round of his main event against Raul Rosas Jr. at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. Barcelos went limp during a wrestling exchange at the Octagon wall, prompting an immediate referee stoppage. He was removed on a stretcher and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Felder, on commentary duty for the event, recalled the alarming moments that followed. He described seeing Barcelos' neck clinched and unconscious, which initially suggested a cardiac event. What particularly struck Felder was witnessing the doctor immediately check Barcelos' pulse—something he said he had never seen occur after a knockout.
"His neck was all clinched up and he was unconscious," Felder said on the "Believe You Me" podcast. "I thought he had a heart attack, off the bat." As Barcelos remained motionless, Felder's uncertainty deepened: "Is it a stroke? Is it a heart attack?" However, Felder reasoned that the absence of CPR and the presence of a pulse and breathing suggested it was neither.
Barcelos was later confirmed to be conscious and responsive. He subsequently addressed concerns on social media, assuring fans he was doing well and remains under medical supervision. The incident underscored the unpredictable medical risks inherent in combat sports and the need for immediate medical readiness at major events.
