Eddie Alvarez: Ilia Topuria ‘not gonna be the same’ after Gaethje loss

Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has warned against an immediate rematch between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, arguing that the former champion should not receive another title shot after suffering a decisive loss.

Topuria (17-1) suffered his first professional defeat when Gaethje (28-5) stopped him late in their bout at UFC Freedom 250 in June. The Georgian striker was heavily favored entering the lightweight title fight, but Gaethje's striking and gameplan proved too much, forcing a corner stoppage before the final round. Rumors have circulated about a quick rematch, but Alvarez believes that would be a mistake for both Topuria and the promotion.

"If someone beats the sh*t out of you, you don't get a rematch," Alvarez told MMA Junkie. "It needs to be close. You have to at least fight another guy." Alvarez acknowledged the UFC's commercial interest in restoring Topuria, noting the fighter's marketability and revenue generation, but warned the strategy could backfire. He pointed out that Gaethje's coaching staff, led by Trevor Wittman, has extensively analyzed and countered Topuria's approach, giving them a significant edge in a rematch.

Alvarez also emphasized the psychological toll of a decisive loss. Topuria would enter a rematch carrying the memory of the beating he absorbed, potentially unable to perform at the elite level he displayed before the defeat. "He's not gonna be the same Ilia Topuria that he was before Justin beat the sh*t out of him," Alvarez said, suggesting that Topuria needs at least one win against a different opponent before earning redemption against Gaethje.
