Islam Makhachev says there’s a ‘90%’ chance Usman Nurmagomedov joins UFC

Usman Nurmagomedov became a free agent after completing his Professional Fighters League contract with a knockout victory over Archie Colgan, setting the stage for speculation about his next destination. The undefeated lightweight previously turned down a $2 million-per-fight deal from the PFL, signaling openness to other opportunities.

Islam Makhachev, Nurmagomedov's teammate and current UFC welterweight champion, recently indicated a UFC signing is highly likely. Speaking to Russian outlet Match TV, Makhachev assessed the timing as ideal for Nurmagomedov to make the jump to the UFC and pursue championship gold in a division where both Makhachev and their shared mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov previously dominated.

"It's the perfect move for him," Makhachev stated. "He needs to prove he's the best in the world. He could face a Top 10 rival and soon earn a title shot." Makhachev emphasized Nurmagomedov's pedigree—having trained alongside elite competition and worked with multiple champions throughout his career—making the present moment optimal for a UFC transition.

While stopping short of a guarantee, Makhachev expressed strong confidence. "I can't give you 100% answer," he said. "But 90%? Yes." Makhachev also noted that interest in Nurmagomedov fighting PFL rematches has waned, and the broader competitive level in the UFC offers the platform he needs to establish himself as the division's best.
