Dustin Poirier reacts to ‘dirtbag’ Conor McGregor suffering injury at UFC 329

Dustin Poirier expressed little sympathy for Conor McGregor's devastating injury at UFC 329, where the former two-division champion's comeback ended in catastrophic fashion. McGregor suffered a leg injury just 69 seconds into his first fight in five years against Max Holloway at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, forcing the bout to be stopped with McGregor barely able to compete.
Appearing on the Deep Waters podcast, Poirier didn't hold back, saying the injury "couldn't have happened to a better guy" and referencing McGregor's earlier criticism of Poirier's arrest for public drunkenness. Poirier noted McGregor opened the fight with an ambitious jumping spinning heel kick—a risky decision for a 25-minute bout. However, on THE FIGHT with Teddy Atlas, Poirier adopted a more measured tone, defending McGregor against suggestions he deliberately threw caution to the wind due to a pre-existing injury. "I don't think he's a quitter like that," Poirier said, while still questioning McGregor's physical preparation.
Poirier observed that McGregor's appearance at the weigh-ins suggested poor conditioning. "His face looked unhealthy—shiny, bloated, full under the eyes," Poirier noted, speculating that five years away from competition, combined with admitted substance abuse issues and an admitted cocaine habit disclosed during a civil suit testimony, may have weakened McGregor's body. An unhealthy lifestyle can make tissue more susceptible to injury, Poirier explained.
McGregor announced plans to undergo surgery and compete in the final fight of his UFC contract. Poirier expressed hope that McGregor wouldn't become a "freakshow fighter" doing exhibitions, noting the 38-year-old hasn't won since 2020. With another extended layoff likely ahead, critics worry McGregor's massive financial success has eroded his competitive drive—a concern Poirier echoed, wondering whether McGregor still possesses the hunger that made him dominant.
