Opinion | A modest proposal to reinvigorate the UFC fanbase: MMA Majors

A columnist has outlined a proposal to combat UFC oversaturation by creating four annual "MMAjors"—signature events that would carry special prestige and draw casual fans, similar to golf's four majors. The UFC currently runs 40+ events yearly across multiple formats, leading some fans to feel the product is diluted and losing cultural impact despite strong business metrics. The columnist argues that by designating one quarterly "Major" event with premium cards and elevated production, the UFC could restore scarcity value and give fighters a true aspirational stage, while maintaining its current event volume for hardcore viewers. The proposed MMAjors would anchor to existing patterns: an Australian event in Q1, a rotating major-city event in Q2, International Fight Week in Q3, and Madison Square Garden in Q4. This model would be low-lift for the UFC—essentially repositioning existing resources—but could create four annual star-making moments instead of relying on occasional one-off spectacles like the White House card or UFC 300. Other premium events like Noche UFC would remain prestigious without being official Majors, similar to how golf has tournaments below major-championship tier. The columnist contends this structure addresses a core problem: when everything is branded as important, nothing feels important, and casual audiences tune out.
