Demetrious Johnson questions how 20-0 UFC title challenger still has a job
Demetrious Johnson questioned Movsar Evloev's place in the UFC during a recent podcast appearance, specifically criticizing the undefeated featherweight's complete lack of stoppage victories across his tenure with the promotion.
Evloev (20–0) is set to challenge Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight title at UFC 333 on October 24 in Abu Dhabi. Despite his perfect record, the Russian has secured zero finishes in his 10 UFC appearances—a striking contrast to his overall resume of seven career stoppages across 20 professional wins. His last finish came in 2018, well before entering the UFC.
During the "Precision" podcast, hosted by Johnson and Israel Adesanya, Mighty Mouse voiced frustration over the UFC's inconsistent application of entertainment standards. Johnson pointed out that the promotion recently released Michael Page, who compiled a 5–1 record without a finish, yet continues to employ Evloev despite similar output. "How the f*ck is he still in the UFC?" Johnson said. "The UFC is so gung-ho about cutting people who aren't exciting, no knockouts." He expressed particular bewilderment that Evloev, known for his grappling skills, hasn't recorded even a single submission in the UFC.
Evloev's championship opportunity underscores a broader debate in MMA: whether an undefeated record and consistent decision victories merit title contention in an era where the UFC frequently prioritizes entertainment value. Volkanovski, the challenger's opponent, was present during Johnson's critique but did not directly respond to the criticism of his upcoming opponent.
