Bo Nickal feels he receives undeserved hate from fans
Bo Nickal is pushing back against criticism from fans who question whether he has earned his spot on major UFC cards, including the upcoming middleweight bout against Kyle Daukaus (17-4) on the UFC White House event on June 14.
The Penn State three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion believes detractors overlook the decades of dedication he invested in his craft before transitioning to MMA in 2021. Nickal, who holds an 8-1 record, stressed in a recent interview that he does not control his own matchmaking and has accepted every fight the UFC has offered him since earning his contract through back-to-back first-round finishes on Dana White's Contender Series in 2022.
"I think a lot of people think that I haven't earned this spot," Nickal said. "What they don't realize is that I have been working at my craft and dedicated to it since five years old." He noted the oddity of receiving criticism for placements decided entirely by the promotion.
Nickal's rise has been notable but not without setback. He finished three of his first four UFC opponents before suffering a loss to Reinier de Ridder, the former One Championship double champion, which derailed his hype train. He has since recovered with a striking finish—a brutal head kick knockout of Rodolfo Vieira. The animosity from some fans may stem from perceptions that Nickal has received premium booking despite limited UFC tenure, though he continues to accept challenges without complaint.
