Charles Johnson: I learned Scottish twister submission from former Bellator champ
Charles Johnson made history at UFC 330 by submitting Eduardo Henrique with a Scottish twister, a rare and technically demanding submission. The victory showcased Johnson's expanded grappling arsenal beyond his well-known striking prowess, as he weathered an early offensive storm from his opponent before capitalizing on a grappling exchange.
The Scottish twister is a variation of the traditional twister submission that demands precise control of the opponent's waist and torso—a move far from improvisation for Johnson. At the post-fight press conference, he revealed that former Bellator champion Patrick "Patchy" Mix taught him the technique. "I hit that at least once or twice a week on people in practice, so it's just about getting there," Johnson explained. "Patchy Mix actually showed me that move, so I'm gonna give him his flowers, man."
Johnson, now 20-9, has alternated wins and losses over his last seven bouts and has already competed four times in the year. Notably, he holds a knockout victory over reigning champion Joshua Van, who is scheduled to defend his title at the next numbered UFC event. The submission win demonstrates that Johnson's skillset extends well beyond striking, adding another weapon to his arsenal as he continues his push toward title contention.
