Demian Maia cites GSP, Diaz brothers as ideal opponents for grappling match, leaves door open for final MMA fight

Demian Maia has not entirely ruled out a return to competition, whether in grappling or mixed martial arts, though a comeback to the octagon appears less probable at this stage of his career.

The 48-year-old former UFC title contender at middleweight and welterweight last competed in June 2021, losing a decision to Belal Muhammad—a result that left him feeling as though his career ended without proper closure. Despite that setback, Maia has remained active in the sport through his jiu-jitsu academy in São Paulo, UFC commentary work on Paramount+, fighter coaching (including Ian Machado Garry and Charles Oliveira), and worldwide seminars. Over his 33-fight UFC tenure, Maia posted 22 victories, with 11 coming by submission against notable opponents like Carlos Condit, Chael Sonnen, Ben Askren, and Matt Brown.

Regarding a potential final MMA bout, Maia expressed cautious openness. "If the UFC came to me with an offer for a meaningful fight, in the right setting, I wouldn't do it," he told MMA Fighting, adding that venues like Rio de Janeiro or Las Vegas—places tied to his storied history—would appeal to him. He acknowledged never receiving a proper farewell and harbors lingering regret about that anticlimactic ending.

On the grappling front, Maia has competed three times since his last UFC appearance, defeating Alex Oliveira and Benson Henderson (by decision) while losing to Sang Wook Kim. When discussing potential grappling opponents, Maia named Georges St-Pierre and the Diaz brothers—Nate and Nick—as particularly intriguing matchups due to their jiu-jitsu credentials and ability to generate mainstream appeal. He confirmed receiving offers regularly from multiple organizations but has not signed anything, waiting for an opponent and financial package that genuinely excites him. He also revealed turning down a short-notice offer from Hype to face Arman Tsarukyan in Rio in March, citing both the tight timeline and logistical constraints of an ongoing seminar tour.
