Demian Maia reveals what makes Ian Garry a threat to Islam Makhachev

Legendary mixed martial artist Demian Maia has outlined why Ian Garry presents a legitimate threat to Islam Makhachev in their UFC welterweight title clash scheduled for August 15 at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Maia, who has become a key part of Garry's training camp, believes the Irish welterweight's superior fight intelligence and adaptability are his greatest assets against the dominant Dagestani champion. While many observers cite Garry's physical advantages—longer reach, excellent takedown defense, and cardiovascular conditioning—Maia emphasizes something deeper. "His biggest strength is his fight IQ," Maia told Sherdog. "Garry reads his opponents extremely well and knows how to adapt."

Maia's partnership with Garry began in 2023 after meeting at a seminar in Barcelona. The jiu-jitsu legend recently conducted an intensive grappling-focused camp with Garry in Spain before the fighter returned to England for the final phase of his title camp. Maia cited a specific example of Garry's ability to absorb and execute instruction: during his fight against Carlos Prates last year, Garry successfully deployed a takedown variation that Maia had taught him during fight week, executing it roughly ten times throughout the bout.

Despite his confidence in Garry's skill set, Maia refuses to underestimate Makhachev, who carries a 28-1 record and enters as a -300 favorite. "Islam is one of the greatest fighters of all time," Maia stated. "His jiu-jitsu is of an extremely high level. I'd even say he could compete successfully in elite no-gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments. So, it's going to be a historical title dispute." Maia confirmed he will be in Garry's corner on fight night alongside coaches Diego Lima, John Hathaway, and Paulo Mauricio Strauch.
