UFC 330: All-action finisher saves welterweight bout on Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry fight card

Chidi Njokuani's UFC 330 bout is back on the card after all. The UFC announced that Joel Alvarez will step in on short notice to face Njokuani at UFC 330, scheduled for August 15 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.
Alvarez, known as "El Fenomeno," steps up from short notice after Geoff Neal withdrew from the matchup. The welterweight has an interesting recent trajectory: following a strong 7-2 run at lightweight marked by seven finishes, Alvarez moved up to 170 pounds and took a decision victory over Vicente Luque at UFC Rio last October. However, his second welterweight appearance proved difficult—former Bellator champion Yaroslav Amosov dominated and stopped him at UFC 328 in May.
Njokuani is fighting to snap a two-fight losing skid. He suffered a devastating 69-second submission loss to Jake Matthews at UFC Nashville in July 2025, then dropped a unanimous decision to Carlos Leal at February's UFC Houston event.
UFC 330 is headlined by Islam Makhachev making his first welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry, with Mackenzie Dern defending her strawweight crown against Gillian Robertson in the co-main event.
