Chidi Njokuani explains bizarre UFC 330 weigh-in mix-up
Chidi Njokuani's path to the scales at UFC 330 took an unexpected detour before he secured an upset unanimous decision victory over Joel Alvarez at welterweight. The fighter initially missed weight, registering at half a pound over the non-title 171-pound limit on the official scale, forcing him to step on again shortly after to make the cut.
Njokuani blamed a faulty scale and confusion from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission for the mix-up. He explained that he had successfully made weight backstage on the digital scale while wearing his underwear. When the official scale showed him a pound heavy, commission officials asked him to cut further. Njokuani refused, even jokingly threatening the official overseeing the weigh-in.
"They make us weigh in on the digital scale in the back first," Njokuani said at the post-fight press conference. "I weighed in on the scale in the back with my underwear on and I was on weight. So, they were like, 'Alright, go out there and weigh yourself.' And then I was a pound heavy. They're like, 'You're going to have to cut,' and I'm like, 'I'm not going to cut anything.' I'm going to cut this motherf*cker if he doesn't get his sh*t together. They tried it again, put the scale on the right weight and then I stepped on and it worked out."
With the victory, Njokuani snapped a two-fight losing streak and improved his record to 26-12.
