Caio Borralho explains why he accepted risky UFC 334 matchup
Top-ranked middleweight Caio Borralho has accepted a matchup against unranked Yousri Belgaroui at UFC 334 on November 14 at Madison Square Garden, prioritizing activity over the safer risk-reward calculus typically favored by high-ranked contenders. The decision reflects Borralho's eagerness to return to competition following nearly six months sidelined due to emergency rib surgery.
Borralho acknowledged that the bout carries minimal upside from a rankings perspective—a victory would likely only maintain his current standing rather than propel him higher. Nevertheless, the Brazilian contender explained his reasoning to Sherdog: "I've been almost six months without fighting. I had to take some time off because I had to undergo emergency surgery on my rib. I want to stay active. I believe I'm one of the best in the world. Whoever they put in front of me, I'm going to have to prove that I'm one of the best in the world."
Borralho elaborated on his strategic approach moving forward. "If I beat him, I maintain my position in the rankings; maybe I won't move up," he said. "But there are all the other things I talked about: not being inactive, beating a guy who is coming in on a roll and who everyone thinks is going to knock me out. This is a fight where I'm only moving forward. I'll win this one, move on to the next, win again and then go for the belt."
The middleweight enters the bout on a high note after defeating Reinier de Ridder in his last outing, a comeback victory that erased the sting of his sole UFC defeat against Nassourdine Imavov.
