Why Santiago Ponzinibbio refuses to turn down UFC fights

Santiago Ponzinibbio says he will never turn down a UFC fight, even though the 39-year-old Argentine veteran is financially secure enough to retire whenever he wishes. Ponzinibbio (30–9) is preparing for his 21st UFC appearance against Sam Patterson (14–3) at UFC Abu Dhabi, and in recent comments he explained that his willingness to accept any opponent stems from his love of competition rather than financial necessity.

"It's what I have in my blood," Ponzinibbio said. "It's my instinct. I love to fight. Thank God, I don't need to fight more. If I want to stop, I can stop. It's not about money; it's just about what I love. I love the competition, the challenge." He noted that while he could selectively reject bouts, he instead accepts every fight the UFC offers him, viewing each as a chance to test himself against a new challenger.

Ponzinibbio has spent more than a decade in the UFC welterweight division, facing many of the sport's top contenders. However, his recent form has declined—he has dropped three of his last four bouts, including a recent stoppage loss to Daniel Rodriguez. Patterson, his upcoming opponent, is also coming off a setback: a decision loss to Michael Page that ended a four-fight streak of first-round finishes.

At this stage of his career, Ponzinibbio's approach reflects a fighter driven by passion rather than necessity. His willingness to accept any matchup demonstrates the mentality that has kept him competitive at the highest level for over a decade, even as age and recent losses suggest his window at elite welterweight may be narrowing.
