UFC Abu Dhabi: Sam Patterson scores brutal knockout of longtime veteran

Sam Patterson rebounded from a recent setback with an impressive second-round knockout of Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Abu Dhabi, signaling a return to form for the English welterweight.
Ponzinibbio, a 40-fight veteran, struck first and controlled the early exchanges, seeking to hand Patterson a second consecutive loss. The younger and more powerful Patterson weathered the initial storm, however, and began turning the tide as Round 1 wound down. By the midpoint of Round 2, Patterson had seized momentum entirely, overwhelming Ponzinibbio with a barrage of strikes.
The decisive moment came when Patterson landed a hard right hand that sent Ponzinibbio to the canvas. Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight at 3:06 of the second round. Patterson improved to 15-3-1, bouncing back from a decision loss to Michael Page. His previous five victories had all come by knockout or submission, and this win restored his knockout-heavy finishing form. Ponzinibbio fell to 30-10 and continues a difficult stretch, having won just three times since 2021.
