Teammate claims Yair Rodriguez is moving up to lightweight

Yair Rodriguez appears to be transitioning from featherweight to lightweight, according to his teammate Belal Muhammad. The information emerged when Muhammad, who trains alongside Rodriguez at Valle Flow Striking in Bensenville, Illinois, suggested a matchup between the Mexican fighter and Rafael Fiziev after Fiziev knocked out Manuel Torres via a spectacular spinning back kick at UFC Baku last weekend.

When a fan noted that Rodriguez competes at featherweight, Muhammad clarified that "El Pantera" is moving up in weight class. Muhammad also revealed that Rodriguez underwent wrist surgery following his most recent victory over Patricio Freire, suggesting the recovery period may have factored into any potential time away from competition.

Rodriguez (20-5) has enjoyed a storied career at featherweight despite competing primarily against elite talent. His only losses have come against top contenders including Frankie Edgar, Max Holloway, Alexander Volkanovski, and Brian Ortega. He captured the interim featherweight title in 2023 by defeating Josh Emmett but fell short in his bid for the undisputed championship when facing Volkanovski. A move to lightweight would place Rodriguez in a new arena and potentially reshape his title prospects at 155 pounds, where he would encounter a different set of contenders and fighting styles.
