Justin Gaethje has brutal warning for whoever fights Ilia Topuria next
Justin Gaethje, the current UFC lightweight champion, has issued a stark warning to whoever faces Ilia Topuria next, praising the former two-division champion's skill while cautioning that his next opponent will be in serious danger.
Gaethje (28–5) defeated Topuria (17–1) by TKO in the fourth round at UFC Freedom 250 at the White House in June, handing the Spanish fighter his first professional loss. Despite their rivalry and ongoing trash talk, Gaethje has consistently acknowledged Topuria's elite standing and believes the setback will not diminish his threat level when he returns to competition.
"Whoever fights Topuria next is gonna be f*cked," Gaethje said on the "Double Coverage" podcast. "If he forgets how dangerous this sport is, how there is a little bit of luck and chance and makes mistakes, he is not going to be at his best or locked in as he should be. But outside of that, without those mental mistakes, he is one of the best in the world. There's no doubt about it."
Gaethje reiterated his respect for Topuria's abilities and expressed a desire to see him rebound successfully, noting that the loss was partly attributable to mental lapses rather than a fundamental skill deficit. While whispers of an immediate rematch between the two persist, the landscape may shift if Arman Tsarukyan's credentials strengthen—Tsarukyan secured an impressive first-round knockout of Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 on September 19, further solidifying his claim as the division's top contender and legitimate title challenger.
