UFC 330’s Kaue Fernandes expects big name next after several top-10 lightweights turned down fight

Kaue Fernandes will look to make a statement in the lightweight division when he faces Jalin Turner at UFC 330 on August 15 in Philadelphia, marking his return to competition after an 11-month layoff.

Fernandes last competed in September 2025, when he defeated Harry Hardwick via calf kicks in Paris and earned a $50,000 performance bonus. Hardwick stepped in on short notice after Fares Ziam withdrew due to a family death. Before that victory, Fernandes said the UFC attempted to book him against multiple top-10 ranked lightweights, but roughly three of them declined the matchup. The Nova União fighter emphasized he does not believe fear drove those decisions, suggesting instead that ranked fighters may have preferred to pursue title shots rather than face an unranked opponent.

Fernandes adopted a respectful, old-school approach to his career, declining to publicly name the fighters who turned him down. He views the sport through the lens of honor and warrior culture, particularly among Brazilian competitors, and credits his exciting fighting style to his natural temperament rather than any deliberate strategy. He has won his past three UFC bouts—against Mohammad Yahya, Guram Kutateladze, and Hardwick—with two coming by knockout, and used his time away to develop as a "freestyle" mixed martial artist.

Turner, known as "The Tarantula," brings momentum of his own after knocking out Edson Barboza in the first round. That victory came as a rebound from back-to-back stoppage losses to Renato Moicano and Ignacio Bahamondes. Fernandes expressed respect for Turner's caliber while expressing confidence that a win would catapult him into the top 15, and possibly top 10, of the division. UFC 330 marks Fernandes's debut on a numbered card, and he views the opportunity as both a significant test and a chance to prove his place among the division's elite.
