Rhys McKee targets PFL rankings in Ernesto Rodriguez clash
Rhys McKee is targeting a spot in the PFL rankings with a victory over Ernesto Rodriguez at PFL Dubai on November 14. The Northern Irish welterweight (15-7-1) sees major stakes in the matchup and believes a win could launch him into the promotion's competitive landscape.
McKee made a successful PFL debut in April at the Belfast event, earning a decision victory over Alex Lohore. His return to winning ways came after two unsuccessful stints in the UFC, where he compiled a 1-3 record following a championship run with Cage Warriors. Now competing in the PFL's welterweight division, McKee is eager to make his mark against ranked competition.
"I've seen how big an event is there and know it'll be a special night, having a fight that will put me straight into the rankings with a tough opponent in Ernesto; it's all to play for," McKee said via BBC Sport.
Rodriguez (ranked #7 in the PFL welterweight division) enters the bout looking to rebound from a short-notice title challenge loss to Thad Jean in July. The Cuban-American fighter fell via technical knockout in the third round when he stepped up to challenge Jean for the welterweight title. The PFL Dubai event at the Coca Cola Arena will serve as an opportunity for both fighters to climb the promotional ladder, with McKee hunting his first ranked victory and Rodriguez aiming to reclaim momentum.
