Christian Rodriguez credits late coach for spectacular finish at UFC Vegas 119

Christian Rodriguez delivered a spectacular first-round finish at UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday in Las Vegas, honoring the legacy of his late coach Duke Roufus with a devastating technique signature to the legendary kickboxing mentor. Rodriguez (13-4) opened his featherweight bout against Amil (11-3) by dropping his opponent with a flush shin-to-chin head kick. Though Amil miraculously remained conscious, Rodriguez immediately secured a guillotine choke to finish the fight cold.

Post-fight, Rodriguez credited Roufus—who passed away in October—for instilling the head kick knowledge that proved decisive. "My coach who passed away in October, his name was Duke Roufus, he was a kickboxing legend," Rodriguez said. "He was known for head kicks. When people start defending like a boxer, the head kick will always be there. And it worked out perfectly. It's something that he passed on to me, and I still have that knowledge."

The victory marked Rodriguez's return to the win column following back-to-back losses—the first consecutive losing streak of his career. After Roufus' death, Rodriguez relocated to Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas to train under Eric Nicksick. His comeback came after a 10-month layoff, which Rodriguez believes transformed him personally and reignited his passion for competition. "I missed the sport so much; it's been a long 10 months," he said. "But I feel like the time away definitely made me into a different person. It's definitely brought the love for the sport again for me." Moving forward, Rodriguez emphasized his desire to stay active and build momentum.
