UFC Sacramento: Shamil Gaziev makes Kennedy Nzechukwu pay for hands-down defense with 1-punch knockout

Shamil Gaziev made quick work of Kennedy Nzechukwu at UFC Sacramento, stopping the heavyweight in just 80 seconds with a straight right hand knockout. Nzechukwu, a former light heavyweight making his second divisional appearance, attempted a hands-down defensive strategy that proved disastrous against Gaziev's heavy hands.

From the opening bell, Nzechukwu relied on speed and footwork to avoid exchanges, but Gaziev cut off the cage efficiently. After narrowly missing with an initial right hand, Gaziev immediately fired again and caught Nzechukwu flush on the chin. The impact sent the fighter crashing to the mat in dramatic fashion, bringing an end to the contest at 1:20 of Round 1.

With this knockout victory, Gaziev (15-3) improved to 4-3 in the UFC and has now recorded three knockout wins inside the promotion. Nzechukwu fell to 2-2-1 in the heavyweight division at 14-7-1 overall. The loss was particularly painful for Nzechukwu, whose UFC tenure has been marked by vulnerability to power striking—four of his six UFC losses have come by knockout or submission.
