Ronda Rousey continues taking shots at Hunter Campbell
Ronda Rousey has renewed her criticism of UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell, attributing the promotion's failure to book a matchup between herself and Gina Carano to Campbell's poor judgment and dismissive attitude toward veteran female fighters.
Rousey's comments came in the wake of the inaugural Most Valuable Promotions MMA event on Netflix, which headlined Rousey versus Carano and drew over 17 million viewers. The bout marked Rousey's return to competition after stepping away from MMA in 2016. According to Rousey, Campbell had previously told Carano he was unsure how to market "a couple of 40-year-olds," a remark she finds indicative of broader failures in the UFC's fighter management.
Rousey argued that Campbell's shortcomings extend far beyond gender, claiming he fundamentally lacks the ability to recognize and promote athlete value. "It's not that he doesn't know how to market us, it's that he doesn't know how to market anybody," Rousey stated during an interview with Fight Culture.
The successful MVP MMA debut has fueled speculation that Campbell's misstep helped create a credible alternative to the UFC. Rousey suggested that the UFC's incompetence allowed MVP to emerge as a legitimate rival promotion. "He basically allowed us to create the Lamborghini to his Ferrari and created the biggest rival that the UFC is ever going to have," she said. "Just because he's so arrogant, stupid and chauvinist." With MVP's strong start and growing fighter options, Rousey believes the combat sports landscape is entering an era of increased competition and athlete empowerment.
