Luis Hernandez eyes Chris Curtis as ‘final nail’ in UFC career
Luis Hernandez, fresh off an impressive UFC debut, has his sights set on Chris Curtis despite Curtis's recent push for a matchup. Hernandez made headlines by submitting Sedriques Dumas in under a minute on two days' notice at UFC Vegas 121, earning an immediate contract. Curtis claimed to have requested the fight with UFC matchmakers, who reportedly declined due to experience disparity—and denied the request again after Hernandez's successful debut.
However, Hernandez is in no rush. He intends to build his profile and name value before facing Curtis, who holds a 6-5 UFC record. Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Hernandez indicated that Curtis appears to be seeking attention and that he views a potential victory over the middleweight as a major milestone rather than an urgent priority.
"If his name comes down the list, I could be the final coffin to put him into retirement," Hernandez explained. "He's 6-5 in the UFC. He's almost on his way out. If I'm the final nail, it'll happen sooner or later. It's gonna be for money, though. I want to build my name first, and then I will fight him."
Hernandez also clarified his relationship with Sean Strickland, stating they have resolved their differences following their brawl at a Tuff-N-Uff event last year. That incident occurred after Hernandez mocked both Strickland and Curtis following a victory, resulting in Strickland throwing a punch before security intervened. Despite the past drama, Hernandez says he and Strickland are on good terms.
