Sean Clancy Jr. explains why he waited until Round 2 to finish Gary Balletto Jr.

Sean Clancy Jr. earned a UFC contract by defeating Gary Balletto Jr. via second-round stoppage at Week 3 of Dana White's Contender Series 2026. The undefeated welterweight, fighting in the 170-pound division, took Balletto Jr. down and finished him with a barrage of elbows that split his opponent's face open.

The 23-year-old former Cage Warriors interim welterweight champion has now finished all nine of his professional wins. In his post-fight interview, Clancy Jr. expressed elation at achieving one of his longtime goals—creating a striking-induced injury—describing the sensation of feeling Balletto Jr.'s face crushed between his elbow and the mat as "phenomenal."

Clancy Jr. suggested he deliberately extended the bout into the second round to gain experience against Balletto Jr., whom he praised as skilled on the ground. He claimed he possessed the power to finish Balletto Jr. in the opening round but chose instead to spend time working in the grappling exchanges. "I know I could have done that to him in the first round," Clancy Jr. said. "Just wanted to have fun. Pick up the experience."
