Daniel Cormier reveals bizarre UFC commentary story involving alleged fight-fixing

Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier recounted a surreal broadcasting moment on the "In the Bayou" podcast when he unknowingly provided live commentary on a UFC fight that was simultaneously under federal investigation for suspected match-fixing.

During the bout at the UFC Apex, Cormier spent the broadcast criticizing one fighter's shockingly poor grappling fundamentals, unaware that the suspect performance was allegedly intentional. "I'm on commentary wondering how this kid could be so bad," Cormier said. "These are basic things you should be able to do and defend."

UFC officials later informed Cormier that the fighter had been suspected of deliberately trying to lose the bout, and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was already present due to suspicious betting activity flagged on the fight. "Come to find out this dude was trying to throw the fight but not doing a good job of it," Cormier recalled. "Then they called me and said, 'DC, the fact that you were calling him out and you had no idea what was going on… When the kid lost the way that he did, they took him to the back because the FBI was already there.'"

Cormier did not identify the specific fight but emphasized that regulators now closely monitor betting markets for irregular movement and act swiftly when anomalies emerge. He credited the UFC with implementing safeguards to preserve competitive integrity while acknowledging that fight-fixing remains a lingering concern across combat sports. "You have to keep it authentic. It has to be real," he said.
