Alexandre Pantoja calls Joshua Van loss a ‘great gift from God’
Alexandre Pantoja has reframed his shocking injury loss to Joshua Van as a turning point that has sharpened his focus ahead of their rematch at UFC 331.
Pantoja's UFC flyweight title reign ended abruptly in December when Van caught his kick 26 seconds into their bout, forcing him backward. As Pantoja tried to brace his fall with his arm, he suffered an injury that brought the fight to a premature close. The anticlimactic finish left him devastated initially, but the former champion's perspective has shifted dramatically.
In an interview with Stake, Pantoja described the loss as "a great gift from God," explaining that the experience has allowed him to reset mentally and return to the title picture with renewed determination. "I am a very fast learner and I really understood what I had to do," Pantoja said. "I feel like this was such a great gift from God, to allow me to lose like that and come back to have this opportunity to go again and get the championship back."
Since the loss, Pantoja has overhauled his approach to training, diet, and recovery. He credits the time away with helping him build a stronger support system and adopt better sleep habits, allowing him to focus more intently on his preparation. The shift from cordial relations to heightened tension between the two fighters has added another layer to their upcoming rematch, setting the stage for a more heated encounter than their first meeting.
